In three seasons, Men’s Basketball coach Aaron Nixon has led three different teams to the post-season while the Women’s Basketball team finished the season in a respectable fifth place in the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference. The Baseball team is preparing to defend their championship season from a year ago. Coach Bryan Komlos looks to return the softball team to championship status held before the pandemic. The track and field and cross-country teams will put forth their best foot to race for the top of the record books during the outdoor season.
The Men’s Basketball team finished second in the conference with a record of 14-2 and 21-10 overall led by sophomore Devonte Greene and freshmen guard Christopher Brownlee.
At 6’3, Green averaged double digits in points and rebounds and won player of the week in the OCCAC three out of five weeks in the second half of the season. Greene led the Conference and overall in field goal percentage, offensive rebounds, defensive rebounds, total rebounds, and total rebounds per game.
In his last game as a Triceratops, Green scored 32 points which included 4 3-pointers, grabbed 18 rebounds, had two assists and 1 steal.
Brownlee proved he could play defense and was inserted in the starting line-up in the second half of the season. Brownlee went on to average 16 points and lead the OCCAC and overall, in 3-pointers made.
The Women’s Basketball team had a lot of “firsts” to overcome this season. Dion Griffin was selected as the new head coach and 10 freshmen rounded out the 12-player roster. The team finished 5-9 in the OCCAC and 10-16 overall. Next season should give the Tops an advantage if the freshmen return for their sophomore year.
The Baseball team has not played a conference game this year. The team is in 3rd place with an overall record of 6-5 after opening the season on the road in Shelby, North Carolina. After returning home, The Tops won four games 16-6 and 7-2 against Lorain Community College on March 3 and 20-4 and 5-2 against SUNY Broome Community College on March 9.
The Softball team has not played a conference game and has a record of 2-4 overall as they warm up for the season in Florida. The team begins conference play later in March against Lakeland Community College.
The Track and Field team saw Keyonna McGill set school records in the 60-meter, 200-meter, and 400-meter races. McGill qualified for the National Junior College Athletic Association Indoor Championship held in Lubbock, Texas on March 7-8. She topped her 200-meter record with a time of 25.35.
The Track and Field and Cross-Country teams will begin the outdoor season later in March.
