Tri-C Eastern library spaces provide students with the digital equipment and tools needed for success, both inside and outside the classroom. In today’s digital world, having access to the right resources is essential for academic achievement. The Eastern Campus Library provides technology resources and a distraction-free space, making it an essential asset for students striving for academic success.
The Eastern Campus Library is dedicated to supporting student success by providing a variety of digital tools and study spaces designed to enhance the academic experience. Students have access to high-speed desktop computers and reliable printers, making it easy to complete assignments efficiently. Private study rooms, equipped with laptops and whiteboards, offer the perfect space for collaboration or focused independent work.
For those looking to refine their writing skills, the Writing Center provides expert guidance in subjects like Humanities and English. Additionally, students can borrow high-speed personal hotspots to stay connected from anywhere. The library also offers a more essential list of academic tools, including graphing calculators and a diverse collection of books available for rental.
Recognizing the importance of digital accessibility, Tri-C President Todd Kitchen took action after hearing from students about the financial barriers of technology. The high cost of purchasing technology (such as laptops, tablets, or specialized equipment) presented a barrier for many students, creating an inability to study effectively. Without quiet spaces equipped with technology or study rooms with adequate resources, students might have faced difficulties in staying focused or collaborating with peers. In response, the Eastern Campus Library introduced several initiatives to bridge the digital divide, ensuring all students have access to essential resources.
Among these initiatives, students can now rent 4G wireless hotspots, providing seamless internet connectivity in any location—whether at home, on the bus, or in a park. According to an anonymous student at the Eastern Campus Library, “these hotspots offer four hours of battery life,” making them a reliable option for students on the go. The student also states these hotspots made studying much easier.
When President Kitchen was asked about the motivation behind the library’s expansion of technology and materials, he confirmed that these initiatives are largely driven by student needs.”The expansion of technology such as the Student Laptop Program, the Student Wi-Fi Hotspot Program, and Study Pods are driven, in part, by reported student financial, accessibility, and academic needs.” He further went on to explain that the Covid-19 pandemic shed light on access issues across Cuyahoga county. “[Tri-C] wanted to do its part in meeting the needs of our students while promoting success in students education.” In a final response towards this topic, President Kitchen elaborated that “We are happy to report that many of the efforts which began in 2020 have continued to the present day.”
The Affordable Laptop Program allows students to purchase a Dell Inspiron 15 for only $250—a fraction of its market price. This initiative ensures that students who need a personal laptop for coursework can obtain one at an affordable rate.
When President Kitchen was asked about funding for these laptops, he highlighted the collaborative effort behind these investments, stating that they are supported by Academic Leadership, faculty, and Information Technology (ITS). Funding for the library’s student resources like laptops, Wi-Fi hotspots, etc, come from ITS, academic programs, and the Learning Commons’ budgets.
A major technological upgrade at the Eastern Campus Library has been the replacement of traditional computers with high-end Apple iMacs. These high-tech computers are designed to meet the demands of modern academic work, and the desktops are available year-round across all four Tri-C campuses.
Regarding future expansions, President Kitchen assured that “the College regularly examines its financial commitments and investment in classroom/student technology and collaborates with appropriate faculty, staff, and student groups to make technology resource allocation decisions for the future.” Additionally, any decision to expand those services would be determined by a joint discussion between the College’s ITS and academic leadership, as informed by student and faculty needs.
By ensuring equal access to technology, the library helps students overcome educational barriers and sets them up for long-term success. Whether you need a quiet place to study, access to advanced technology, or academic support, the Eastern Campus Library is here to help. Don’t miss out on these opportunities that can make a lasting impact on your academic journey.
